First Time Setup - Taste Quiz

When you first log in, you'll complete a quick 4-question taste quiz to help BoozeButler understand your preferences:

  1. Favorite Spirits - Select the spirits you enjoy most
  2. Sweetness Preference - Choose your preferred sweetness level (Dry, Balanced, or Sweet)
  3. Strength Preference - Select your preferred drink strength (Low ABV, Balanced, or Bold/Spirit-forward)
  4. Adventurousness - Indicate how adventurous you are with new flavors and techniques

This quiz sets your baseline preferences. BoozeButler will continue learning from your likes, dislikes, and the drinks you make to improve recommendations over time.

Installing the App (PWA)

BoozeButler is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you can install it on your device:

  • Desktop (Chrome/Edge): Look for the install icon in the address bar, or click the "Install app" button in the header
  • iOS Safari: Tap Share → "Add to Home Screen"
  • Android Chrome: Tap menu → "Install app" or "Add to Home Screen"

Managing Inventory

Adding Items Manually

To add bottles and bar items manually:

  1. Go to the Inventory tab
  2. Fill in the form with:
    • Name: The spirit or item name (e.g., "Bourbon")
    • Type: Select from spirit, liqueur, syrup, juice, bitters, mixer, garnish, etc.
    • Brand: Optional brand name (e.g., "Woodford Reserve")
    • Tags: Comma-separated tags (e.g., "whiskey, bourbon, aged")
  3. Click Add/Update

Scanning Bottles

On supported devices, you can scan your bar shelves:

  1. Click Scan bottles (camera) in the Inventory tab
  2. Take 2-3 photos per shelf in good lighting
  3. Review the detected bottles
  4. Select the items you want to add and click Add Selected

Note: Photo scanning is currently available on localhost/development. Production scanning coming soon.

Marking Items Out of Stock

To mark an item as out of stock, add the tag out or out-of-stock to the item. This helps BoozeButler:

  • Exclude unavailable items from recommendations
  • Include them in shopping list suggestions
Inventory Matching: BoozeButler treats inventory as a binary system — items are either available or unavailable. The app does not track bottle quantities, pours, or depletion, and never assumes usage.

Personalization

BoozeButler learns your preferences to provide personalized recommendations. Here's how it works:

Initial Setup

The 4-question taste quiz you complete during onboarding sets your baseline preferences. This gives BoozeButler a starting point to understand your taste profile.

How BoozeButler Learns

After the initial quiz, BoozeButler continues learning from:

  • Likes and Dislikes: When you like or dislike a recipe, BoozeButler adjusts future recommendations
  • What You Make: The drinks you actually make and serve help BoozeButler understand your preferences better
  • Feedback: Any feedback you provide on recipes influences future suggestions
How Personalization Works: Likes, dislikes, and actions are stored as preference events. Your profile updates deterministically when it is next retrieved — never silently in the background. You can reset personalization at any time from settings.

The more you use BoozeButler, the better it understands your preferences and the more personalized your recommendations become.
